To improve the performance of video games and other high intensity programs in Vista change the level that the programs priority is set to. To change the priority of a program in vista simply right-click on the task bar and select Task Manager. Now right-click on the application who's performance you want to increase and choose Go to Process. Now that the process is selected for you, right-click on it and select Priority. Finally choose the new level you wish the program to run at, I'd suggest Above Normal or High (don't select RealTime because that could interfere with vista process's.)
